What sandwich board signs do for a business

An A-frame sign, also called a sandwich board or sidewalk sign, is a two-sided sign that stands outside your door and tells people walking or driving by what you offer today. Because it's portable, you can set it out in the morning, bring it in at night and move it to wherever the foot traffic is.

Storefronts, restaurants, salons, real estate agents, event organizers and contractors all use them to point people to the door or tell them what's new.

The signs that work best keep the message short: one headline, one offer and your logo. Most people see a sidewalk sign for only a few seconds, so a few large words are easier to take in than a crowded layout.

Custom A-frame signs we print

Each sign uses the same sturdy, double-sided frame with printed faces. Order one online, request a quote for a set, or see A-frame options in our shop.

How to design an A-frame sign people can read from the street

A few rules of thumb for a sidewalk sign that gets read:

  • Make it readable from across the street. Use large, bold letters and save thin or script fonts for small details, if you use them at all.
  • Stick to one headline, one offer and your logo. If you add a phone number or website, keep it short.
  • Use high contrast, like dark text on a light background or white text on a dark one. Avoid light colors on light backgrounds.
  • Use both sides. People coming from each direction see a different face, so each side can carry its own message, like a lunch special on one side and a coffee offer on the other.
  • Plan for changes. Changeable faces let you swap in seasonal promotions, holiday hours or a new menu without buying a new frame.
  • Check local placement rules. Rules for signs on public sidewalks vary by city, so check with your city before setting a sign out on a public sidewalk.

A-frame sign FAQs

How much does a custom A-frame sign cost?

Our changeable Signicade A-frame sign is $389.25, including a black or white frame and two printed 24" x 36" faces. For several signs, custom design work or replacement faces, request a quote.

What size are your A-frame signs?

The frame is 46" tall, 25" wide and 3" deep, and it weighs 19 lbs empty. Each side holds a printed face that is 24" wide by 36" tall.

Will an A-frame sign blow over in the wind?

The base of the frame fills with sand or water, which adds weight and helps the sign stay upright on breezy days. In strong wind or storms, it's still a good idea to bring the sign inside.

Can I change the graphics on my A-frame sign later?

Yes. The faces are recessed into the frame and can be replaced, so you can order new faces for a new promotion, season or price list and keep the same frame. Ask us for a price on replacement faces.

Can you design my A-frame sign?

Yes. Our in-house designers can lay out your sign from your logo, message and photos, and you approve a proof before we print. If you already have print-ready artwork, send it with your order.

How fast can I get an A-frame sign?

Pickup at our shop in Snohomish is usually ready in 2–4 days. If pickup doesn't work for you, shipping is free.

What's the difference between an A-frame sign, a sandwich board and a sidewalk sign?

They're different names for the same kind of sign: a portable, two-sided sign shaped like the letter A that stands on the sidewalk outside a business. People also say sandwich board signs, sidewalk boards or A-boards.

Do you make other storefront signs?
